What is a Sub-ID?

Written by PX | Aug 24, 2026, 5:07:29 PM

You buy 1,000 leads from a publisher.

Some turn into customers. Some never answer the phone. Others look promising at first but go nowhere.

At the end of the month, you look at the publisher's overall conversion rate and decide whether the relationship is working.

But there is a problem.

Those 1,000 leads may not have all come from the same place.

They could have originated from different websites, campaigns, affiliates, landing pages, paid media channels, or other traffic sources. And the performance of each one could be completely different.

If you only look at the publisher level, all that gets blended into one number.

That is where Sub-IDs come in.

What Is a Sub-ID?

A sub-ID is a tracking label, or an identifier attached to a lead that tells you where, within a publisher or lead source, that specific lead originated. Think of it as one level deeper than the publisher's name.

Say a lead comes from the publisher 123leadgen.com. The sub-ID tells you which part of 123leadgen.com sent it: mortgage_calculator, google_paid_search, or landing_page_03. So instead of only knowing “these leads came from Publisher A,” you can see “these leads came from Publisher A, specifically from campaign, source, or page X.”

For example:

Publisher

What the Sub-ID might represent

Publisher A

google_search

Paid search traffic

Publisher A

facebook_01

A specific social campaign

Publisher A

affiliate_27

An affiliate partner

Publisher A

roofing_lp

A particular landing page

That extra level matters because a single publisher rarely runs a single traffic source. One publisher can generate leads through multiple websites, paid campaigns, affiliates, forms, and placements, and those blended sub-sources can perform very differently. One landing page fills your pipeline with leads that book jobs. Another sends leads with dead phone numbers. At the publisher level, they look identical, but at the sub-ID level, the difference is unmistakable.

Without sub-IDs, you are optimizing on averages.

With sub-IDs, you can trace where your leads actually come from down to the individual source, then act on it. This is the basis for Source Management on PX: pause the sub-IDs that underperform, bid more for the ones that convert, and prioritize the sources that convert without cutting off an entire publisher.

Sub-ID vs. Publisher ID: What's the difference?

  • Publisher IDs and Sub-IDs are related, but they answer different questions.
  • A Publisher ID identifies the publisher or company that supplied the lead.
  • A Sub-ID identifies a more granular source within that publisher's supply.

Sub-IDs become much more powerful when outcome data flows back

Knowing where a lead came from is only half of the equation.

The real value appears when that source of information can be connected with downstream outcomes.

Imagine a publisher can see:

Sub-ID A → 14% customer conversion

Sub-ID B → 3% customer conversion

Now both sides of the lead transaction have something concrete to optimize around.

The buyer can identify which supply deserves more budget.

The publisher can understand which traffic is delivering the most value and look for more of it.

How to implement them?

Ask every publisher to share a sub-ID on each lead, and make sure your platform stores it. Then watch performance at the sub-ID level, not just the publisher level. That is where the waste hides, and where most of the wins are. Combining sub-ID-level information with downstream feedback loops makes this end-to-end visibility even more powerful. Compliance and transparency are the first steps to a successful campaign.

Publishers on the PX platform share the lead source and sub-ID of every lead and every campaign, and lead buyers share feedback loops of how those leads performed the funnel. Everything is automated.

See where every lead really comes from, no black boxes.

Full transparency at every step of the way.
